DOUBLE DIRECTIVES +++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
Note the 2-fold actions of
Jesus in today’s gospel
Ø
He summons the 12 & there
is a spiritual action – he gives them power & authority over all demons
Ø
And there is a physical action – he
gives them the ability 2 cure diseases
Ø
He also sends them with a spiritual
directive – to proclaim the Kingdom of God
Ø
And with a physical directive – to
heal the sick
Ø
Over and over again Jesus joins
preaching and healing, the spiritual to the physical
Ø
A TRANSFORMATION NOW
++++++++++++++++++
Ø
This union of these two realms within
the person expresses his concern for our bodies and minds, as well as our
spirits and souls
Ø
The ministry of the Apostles then,
was something to deal not only in words, however comforting, but it was also to
deal in deeds
Ø
It was a message not confined to news
about heaven alone; it proposed to change conditions on earth as well
Ø
It was, if you will, the reverse of “pie
in the sky when you die”
Ø
PHYSICAL & SPIRITUAL AT SLI

Ø
What I find compelling here at SLI is
how the two work together
Ø
The spiritual and psychological
support one another in bringing about new insights and transformation
Ø
While I could advise someone to find
the spiritual in the parish, I would have to send them to a counselor in order
to address the mind and body
Ø
Each disciple was separate and there
was no integration of the two for the individual
Ø
CONCLUSION ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
Nothing would be farther from the
truth than for the Church to say that the physical things of this world do not
matter
Ø
The ministry of SLI is proof that the
body and spirit, the psychological and spiritual, matter a great deal
Ø
And when supported together they can
bring about a new sense of renewal and change
Ø
You are witnesses to that
Ø
