Have you ever encountered an
“armchair ¼back?

S/he miraculously knows everything
about how ¼back should play game
Ø
Such people always know better than
the ¼back in game
Ø
They have advantages of distance
& no real game-time pressure
Ø
Also have zero responsibility for
anything that happens in the game
ARMCHAIR
QUARTERBACKS & JESUS ++++++++++++++
Ø
J, 2, seems to have had a few
armchair ¼backs
Ø
Calls out a group of them,
describing them as children – for standing at distance & acting like
know-it-alls
Ø
Those armchair quarterbacks knew
John who was supposedly too crazy
Ø
Also knew Jesus had to be a joke
Ø
Like children expecting songs 2
control emotions of people, they misunderstand price of admission
ARMCHAIR
QUARTERBACKS & US ++++++++++++++++
Ø
2 B child of wisdom, 2 pay
admission price of life of faith, means we cannot act like armchair ¼backs
Ø
It takes more involvement than that
Ø
Becoming more than bystander or middleman
w/ no “skin” in game means being open 2 gifts & prophetic witness of
variety of people, B they ~ John or J
Ø
Too easy 2 sit back & pick
people apart
Ø
1 must become involved & place
1’s life on line 4 faith
Ø
For J, wisdom & her children R
those who truly C prophetic nature of J’s life & preaching
Ø
They, too, C powerful luv of J as
he eats w/ everyone who invites him: sinner or saint!
Ø
Gathering at table of word &
sacrament gives us this grace 2 C & arise from R armchairs & traverse
path of wisdom in communion procession
CONCLUSION

Ø
Grace of G = available today & everyday in
that procession
Ø
Let us use it as moment of insight, moment of
conversion where R hearts open 2 wisdom
Ø
For that daily opportunity, we give thanks!
