J uses in Gospel was originally the Greek word for actor

Meant 1 who pretends2 B someone s/he is not, but word took on a
very neg connotation
Ø
Means a person who in real life is pretending to be other than
what s/he is – one who wears a mask – one who puts on externals to hide his/her
true self
GOSPEL WOES

In Gospel, J begins series of 7 “woes” against religious leaders
of his day

Calls them hypocrites – meaning actors, pretenders
Ø
Their idea of religious observance was outward, externals, with no
concern for their inner self

Richard Rohr, in article, that 1 of our key problems today is the
lack of an inner life

We need 2 go beyond creeds & moral systems & the rituals
of our worship

In fact, either need this first or else externals will not make

Or externals must quickly lead us to this or they’ll feel hollow
& not hold up 4 us or 4 others
