TV’s TRUTH OR
CONSEQUENCES ++++++++++++++++++
Ø
Eons ago, Truth
or Consequences was one of the most popular game shows on TV
Ø
Contestants guessed the answers to trivia
questions, inevitably got them wrong, and had to pay the “consequences”
Ø
The consequences were performing outrageously
entertaining stunts for which they would win prizes
GOSPEL’S TRUTH OR
CONSEQUENCES +++++++++++++
Ø
Today’s Gospel deals with truth or consequences
of a more serious nature
Ø
Jesus declares that being his disciple helps you
know truth
Ø
And the consequence of this “truth” is you’ll be
set free
Ø
The consequence of being of the world, of
course, is being enslaved in the restrictive confines of sin
Ø
But Jesus’ audience has a hard time grasping
this concept
THEY HAVE THE WRONG
MODEL +++++++++++++++++
Ø
For a people liberated from literal slavery,
being free meant simply not being shackled in very real chains, being out from
under the whips of Egypt
Ø
But J/ challenges them from slavery to the law
Ø
It seems clear that many of the people who first
heard Jesus’ message were also slaves to literal thinking & precise
fulfillment of letter of the law
Ø
They just didn’t “get” his shift to discipleship
& freedom from the law
DO WE “GET” IT? ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
Do we?
Ø
As we journey through Lent, it’s a good question
to ask ourselves
Ø
And it’s good to let Jesus challenge us too
Ø
Challenge us to look more closely at the chains
that make us slaves to our own doubts, ambitions, or appetites
Ø
What sorts of sins enslave us?
CONCLUSION +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
Finding the answer to that question can lead us
to a deeper truth of discipleship – and, by God’s grace, better consequences
