GRUMBLING à
THEMES ++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
“W/ their
patience worn out by journey, people complained agnst G & Moses: ‘We’re
disgusted w/ this wretched food’”
Ø
Grumbling a major theme in story of the Exodus
Ø
Provides setting for such important theological
motifs as waiting upon Lord, patience, faith, forgiveness, hope, & self-discipline
THEMES REST ON
HONESTY & COMPASSION +++++++
Ø
I’d suggest all these themes seem rest upon
bedrock of honesty & compassion
Ø
If not honest enuf 2 admit reality, begin 2 (1)
Have false hopes, (2) Make selfish demands & (3) Live in fantasy world
Ø
We easily give up when the dream bubble bursts
Ø
We’re unsatisfied w/ best efforts of R fam &
friends
Ø
We expect the impossible, cannot forgive
possible human frailty in others
Ø
Patience runs thin, hopes explode, faith gives
out, & we’re bitter against God & neighbor
Ø
& most of all: R rancor attacks &
destroys ourselves
SERPENT ON A POLE +++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
Moses went 2 root of distress & demanded
honsty
Ø
He makes image of their sin & its punishment
& mounts it on a pole…
Ø
“Look,” he
seems to say, “look at what you are &
what you’re doing / Look at fruit of evil straight in the face”
Ø
When people look at bronze serpent, recovered
Ø
When they admit honestly the reality of their
bitter complaints & beg God 2 heal them, they are far along way 2 full
recovery…
JESUS ON A CROSS
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
When we look at the cross, we see ourselves &
confess effects of R sins
Ø
J was made “2B sin,” R sins, R grumbling, R impatience,
R complaints, R inability 2 forgive
CONCLUSION
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
Yes, God so loved the world!
Ø
If on the cross we discover our honest self,
sinful & ungrateful, we also find ourselves closely united w/ J & J w/ ourselves
Ø
If we look upon cross w/ this kind of faith, in
our very gazing, we’re healed & saved
