ASSURANCE IN
ISAIAH +++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
Even while John’s Gospel sets the scene for the
final events of the life of Jesus, the first reading from Isaiah is full of
assurance that wonderful good (salvation) comes out of these tragic happenings
Ø
God says to his servant Israel (Jesus, for us)
that through him “I show my glory”
Ø
And the servant’s reward is with God
Ø
God makes him a light to the nations so that
salvation reaches all
RE JOY A-N-D SUFFERING
+++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
Here in Holy Week, as in all of human life,
joyous elation and suffering walk side by side
Ø
While we recall the suffering and death of Jesus
this week, we cannot do so apart from our knowledge that Jesus is risen
Ø
Similarly, during Eastertide, we celebrate
Jesus’ resurrection while also remembering his passion and death
Ø
Once we’re past the carefree days of our youth,
if we were so blessed, usually our laughter is mingled with tears and our tears
mingled at least with a smile
OUR LIFE & JOY
AND SUFFERING +++++++++++++++++
Ø
Most of human life is a mixture of joy and
sorrow of pain and pleasure
Ø
Especially in pain and tragedy, we may not be
able to see the other aspects
Ø
But usually some good things remain
Ø
Even the worry and sorrow brought on by serious
illness in a family member is often balanced by the closeness of the members in
those moments or by the love and care shown by the neighbors
Ø
Conversely, our joy at the success of a friend
or community member may be tempered by the fact that their own family members
are not alive to share the success and joy
Conclusion +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
As life tells us in so many ways, the experience
of Jesus is ours also, and we have every reason to confidently come to him in
prayer in any part of our life, be it filled with sorrow or joy
Ø
He has been there … and he has overcome
