September 17, 2013
RULES +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  There are rules.  There are protocols
Ø  There is an order to things that have to be followed if the world is going to work
Ø  All well and good, but sometimes people are reduced to robots in the process
Ø  We are more than cogs in the machinery of production
Ø  We are more than a corporation's assets
Ø  We are more than market shares and sales targets we represent
Ø  We are more than numbers on a graph or percentages on a pie chart
LAYING ASIDE THE RULES +++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  Compassion is to recognize that we are more than all of those things
Ø  Compassion is to see beyond one's role and recognize the feelings, the hopes, the hurts, the desire for meaning of those we work and study with
Ø  Jesus embodies such compassion
Ø  In today's Gospel, he allows his heart to be moved by the grief of the widow and acts beyond expectations and what would be considered "reasonable" to help her
OUR LAYING ASIDE THE RULES +++++++++++++++++++
Ø  Such great compassion enables us to forgive, to re-create, to heal
Ø  In the course of this day, you may be called to look beyond a set of circumstances in order to realize the hurt and struggle someone is experiencing
Ø  Remember today's Gospel in such moments and act with the compassion of Jesus
CONCLUSION +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  And today we highlight Jesus’ care for the most vulnerable in society – here a widow without children and so without means of support
Ø  And as Luke systematically connects the church’s ministry to Jesus’ own mission, we have the evangelist’s mandate to embrace compassionate ministry to the poor in Jesus’ name
