Wednesday 23rd Week OT
St. Luke’s Institute
September 11, 2013
A NEW UNDERSTANDING +++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  Physicist Albert Einstein once said, “Problems cannot be solved at the same level of awareness that created them”
Ø  This is especially when dealing with deeply entrenched issues such as systemic poverty, injustice, and violence
Ø  No, old ways of thinking just don’t seem to work
Ø  The mental and social constructs we have relied upon have not held up over time
EPISTLE AND THE OLD WAYS +++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  In today’s epistle, Paul says that Christians must grow beyond what they have always known and practiced
Ø  It’s not enough to apply our very human methods of anger, violence, scheming, compulsions to arrive at a better outcome
Ø  Old ways never bring the result we had hope for
Ø  Christ has placed us on a higher plane and we must bring our minds and hearts to that elevated state
GOSPEL AND A NEW WAY +++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  In today’s Gospel, Jesus urges upon his listeners a different way of seeing
Ø  He doesn’t promise that people will be blessed at some future time when the world is a better place
Ø  He says that at this very moment we are blessed
Ø  Whether mourning or persecuted or hungry or longing for justice
Ø  On this plane of thinking and perceiving, blessing already exists
CONCLUSION +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  It’s practically impossible to see today’s date – September 11th – and not think of the terrorism and fear that we so wish to eliminate from life on Earth
Ø  What better reason to pray for that higher thinking that comes from the mind of God?
Ø  What better day to pray for a transformed view and a deeper wisdom?
