NOT TOO MUCH REALITY
AT 1 TIME ++++++++++++++
Ø
Both readings today meet in the recognition that
humans can only absorb so much at any one time
Ø
T.S. Eliot once said, “Humans cannot bear very much reality”
Ø
We’d say, “Not
too much truth or insight at 1 time”
PAUL & JESUS +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
St. Paul, speaking to the Athenians, starts
where they are w/ a reference 2 to their altar, “To an Unknown God”
Ø
He goes on to speak of other beliefs of theirs
which he also shares
Ø
So up to this point they are with him
Ø
However, when he gets 2 resurrection of J some
sneer and others put him off till some other time
Ø
This teaching was just too much for them
Ø
Jesus recognizes a similar situation with his
disciples when he says,
Ø
“I have
much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now…
Ø
“But when
the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you to all truth”
APPLICATION +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
If we reflect on our life in Christ we must
realize that there are certain truths that we have only come to appreciate with
experience…
Ø
We might add often w/ hard & painful
experience
Ø
There are other truths we hear repeatedly in
preaching or in Scripture which still puzzle us
Ø
It’s as if they are awaiting the right moment
for them to mean anything to us
Ø
There’s 4 most of us a time, determined by
circumstances & the maturity of R heart, which the mysteries of human life &
of G become clearer 2 us
CONCLUSION
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
All that is to be expected
Ø
It tells us simply to be earnest in listening
and open through prayer and reflection on our life to what God has yet to teach
us
Ø
When the Spirit comes he will guide us to all we
need to know
Ø
So much of it is about waiting & waiting in
patience
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
