EAGER TO DO GOOD
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
Letter
2 Titus speaks of how we’ve been cleansed in order that we be “eager to do what is good”
Ø
Any
eagerness “to do what is right” is
spoiled when we make a big deal about how good we are or insist on calling
attention to R good works
Ø
Both
readings suggest some deflating of R tendency 2 become too self-important, too
aware of what a service we’re doing for God and others
THE VIEW OF SERVANTS
+++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
1st
reading seems to say that once we’ve been blessed w/ grace of G, accepted C’s
sacrifice 4 us & cleansing it brings, we should spontaneously, out of
gratitude, be “eager to do what is good”
Ø
In
Gospel Jesus says something similar when he tells us we should be less
concerned about commendation & praise than about doing what life & R relationships
demand of us
Ø
“When you have done all you have
been commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were
obliged to do’.”
DEEPER VIEW OF
SERVANTS ++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
What
makes possible such lack of concern 4 recognition & reward is a strong
sense that life & all we have is a gift,
Ø
That
R waking thought & governing attitude should be praise, thanksgiving
Ø
The
time we spend here in chapel, around this altar, is termed “Eucharist” from the
Greek word for thanksgiving
Ø
If
we’re not convinced of the power and dynamism of giving thanks, why not make an
effort to live one, this day, in thanksgiving,
Ø
An
effort to turn all our feelings and thoughts to thanks?
Ø
So
instead of complaining or feeling sorry 4 selves or wanting more of everything,
why not try to live & feel & think & act out of thanksgiving?
CONCLUSION ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
The
proof will be in the doing
Ø
It
would be interesting to have each of us report back here tomorrow, having given
thanksgiving a try, for just one day
