KIDS OR ADULTS +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  At first sight, today’s gospel sounds like a bunch of children being childish
Ø  “I’m not going to tell you if you’re not going to tell me.” And on it goes
Ø  Actually, interchange between religious leaders & J is about a very adult topic
Ø  It’s to whom do I give authority over my life?
TO WHOM GIVE AUTHORITY? ++++++++++++++++++
Ø  Religious leaders, surprisingly, because they’re religious leaders, will not make a commitment
Ø  Will not decide 1 way or other when comes 2 John Baptist
Ø  J wants them & us 2 make a commitment
Ø  2 whom do we give authority over our lives?
Ø  The answer depends upon identity
Ø  It is the identity of J that’s in question
Ø  That’s really what the religious leaders are getting at when they start the questioning here
Ø  Do we believe that Jesus is a holy man w/ some good things 2 add 2 R spirituality?
Ø  Or do we believe he’s Son of G who’s come 2 earth
Ø  And if we believe that, what difference does it make in way we live?
Ø  It’s not just theoretical question
Ø  Might find selves in same dilemma as religious leaders
APPLICATION ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  Might say J is long-waited Savior & Son of G, but then live daily life in different way
Ø  Does he make a difference in how well we’re willing to do our job?
Ø  Make difference in how talk about others?
Ø  Make difference in whether we’re taking time for prayer?
Ø  Does he make difference in how much we waste in paper cups, towels, and tissues?
CONCLUSION ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  So the question posed in Advent & again at Christmas: who is Jesus for me?
Ø  If he’s what I say he is, do I give him authority over my life?
Ø  That’s what is going on this spat between the religious leaders and Jesus today
