ADVICE TO A CHAPLAIN +++++++++++++++++++++++++

A priest hospital-chaplain-in-training was
called to the ER in early hours of morning
Ø
Drs wanted chaplain present when they broke news
2 family that their young mother didn’t survive accident
Ø
Young chaplain felt utterly helpless
Ø
Realized theology he’d studied in sem =
completely useless in the moment
Ø
Didn’t know what 2 say or do so discussed
feelings w/ chaplain supervisor after fact
Ø
“Here’s
the deal” the older priest said, “You
can’t say anything to ‘fix’ the problem,
Ø
“That
woman was dead and nothing you could have said would have brought her back,
Ø
Your only
job 2 make certain that husband & kids knew not going thru this alone.”
Ø
Good advice, I’d say!
WE’RE NOT ALONE ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
Gospel reminds us we R not alone in life’s
crises & catastrophes
Ø
C present 2 us in love & support of other
residents, in wisdom of therapists & 12-step sponsors, in Ch we’re part of
Ø
If we look w/ determination & conviction can
C these rays of Christ’s light in darkness, violence, and confusion we
encounter in course of R own personal voyages
EFFECT OF NOT BEING
ALONE ++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
In midst of storms that threaten 2 engulf us we
find stamina 2 admit truths about ourselves, courage 2 share who we R w/
others, & 2 exper we’re not alone
Ø
& thru miracle of G’s grace, we somehow R able
2 right R vessels & restore calm…
Ø
As we grasp Js’ hand – in hands of 1 another
OUR PRAYER +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
May our prayer today be: “Save us, O Lord, when R lives R battered by storms of conflict & tempests
of change
Ø
May your wds
of peace & reconciliation still rising waters around us & enable us 2 navigate
R vessels 2 dwelling place U have 4 us
