APOSTLE
VS DISCIPLE +++++++++++++++++++++++++++

They’re on job. The 12 Apostles are called & named
Ø
The only occasion where Matt uses word “Apostle” “One Sent,” to
describe follower of J
Ø
Whereas meaning of “Disciple” is “Learner”
Ø
In gospel emphasis on sending out those J chose
Ø
They’re individuals; we know some of their backgrnd &
circumstances of calling; others R named & then simply become part of “12”
WE have a chance to apply +++++++++++++++++++
Ø
That’s enough to encourage us about possibility of becoming
community around J
Ø
If fishermen (2 sets of brothers w/ family issues that might
involve, tax collector, hot-headed revolutionary Zealot, traitor, & rest
could B chosen & harvested by J as 1st laborers in field, then
surely there’s hope 4 disparateness that’s R Ch today
Ø
J had 2 work hard & not always successfully w/ these
apprentices
ON-THE-JOB
TRAINING +++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
As with all apprentices it’s on-the-job training
Ø
You don’t go away & study & then apply it
Ø
U work alongside master plumber, electrician, seamstress &
learn by watching, trying, failing, growing
Ø
Initial hands-on work seems 2 B go out 2 those Jews J sees as lost
and show them compassion & shows them
Ø
Avoid Gentiles and Samaritans for the time being; a mission 2 them
& 2 all nations comes 2 DD after Resurrection
APPLICATION
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
So apprenticeship of compassion is urgent & local
Ø So too is ours: It’s
to be a “watch-how-I-do-this-Nicholas” apprenticeship that is urgent and local
Ø Compassionate: as in “Watch me; do
as I do”
Ø Urgent: as in now, today,
beginning at the breakfast table and
Ø local: as among ourselves
CONCLUSION

Ø Let’s not take our
eyes off the master craftsman to see his skills for showing compassion
