NARROW GATES ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  Narrow gates in Jerusalem
Ø  Camel but no extra provisions or cargo on it
JESUS & NARROW GATES +++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  Some people ask Jesus: “Lord, will only a few people be saved?”
Ø  Jesus’ response is: “Strive to enter through the narrow gate”
Ø  The question is: what is that “narrow gate” not in the walls of Jerusalem, but for us?
WHO WE ARE +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  Narrow gate is honest admission of who we are
Ø  It’s realizing own littleness & world doesn’t revolve around me
Ø  It’s realizing we R bro/sr 2 every other human being, not above/beyond others, not completely self-sufficient & that all we do impacts others
WAY OF FORGIVENESS +++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  Narrow gate = way of forgiveness, letting go of vengeance or wishing ill to another
Ø  It’s seeking reconciliatn & peace wherever possible
Ø  It’s way of sacrificing 4 good of 1 other persn or for common good of all
Ø  It’s way of letting go negativity & affirming good
RECOGNIZING NEED 4 GOD ++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  Finally, the narrow gate is the way of recognizing our need for God
Ø  It is the way of making time for personal prayer and community worship
CONCLUSION +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  With all this unpacking of camel, so to speak, there’s no cause for discouragement
Ø  Not about all we don’t have, but passing thru gate into the city
Ø  It’s way of entering timelessness of eternity w/ G whom we’ve allowed 2 travel journey of time w/ us
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Ø  The "narrow door" is the honest confrontation of who we are, what we believe, what we hear God asking us in the depths of our hearts.  The "narrow door" to God is difficult to enter - the way of limitless love, unconditional forgiveness, sacrificial selflessness.  But Jesus promises that anyone willing to struggle through these "narrow doors" will be welcomed into the eternal dwelling place of his Father.

Ø  Guide us, O Lord, through the narrow door.  By the light of your wisdom, may we see the way before us clearly and soberly, recognizing the dangers and pitfalls and understand what we must do in order to make our way safely through.  By the hope of your grace, may we dare to move forward, risking our own safety and comfort in order to create your kingdom of peace and compassion in these moments you have given us

 YEAST & GLUTEN ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  I enjoy cooking, esp making bread
Ø  In 1-day bread making course, learned that bread requires 2 things to rise: gluten & yeast
Ø  Gluten provides the structure ~ tinker toys
Ø  Yeast provides the gas, Co2
Ø  Dough w/ yeast, but w/o gluten increases, but spreads out across the table
Ø  Dough w/ gluten, but w/o yeast has the tinker toy structure, but doesn’t rise within it
Ø  With both elements, you get a beautiful bowl of risen dough and great tasting loaves of bread
SPIRIT & CHURCH ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  When Jesus is asked about the K/G, responds, “To what shall I compare it? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch of dough was leavened.”
Ø  To words of the Lord, I’d like to suggest that the yeast as air, spirit, is the living life-giving yeast that makes the bread, bread
Ø  And the gluten that is found in the wheat is the Church as a structure to lift that Spirit high, to give it access and visibility, corporeality, and permanent presence through the ages
WORK & TIME ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  Structure & life-giving gas are not the only important things to remember about bread
Ø  There is the hard work of kneading and the virtue of patient waiting for the dough to rise
Ø  This is also true of experiencing the effects of God’s presence in our world
Ø  It takes work, time, and patience.
CONCLUSION +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  Gluten and yeast, hard work and patient waiting – not only good tips regarding bread making, but for being God’s presence in our world as well

IMAGE LADEN WORLD +++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  We live in image-laden world
Ø  Advertising can change R buying habits / How we see ourselves, politics, & R religious practices
Ø  There’s a stress on being able 2 make things appear genuine, attractive, wholesome, & good
Ø  That = key demand: appearance
Ø  It might B good, but must appear good; not all cracked up 2B, but if marketed well, who cares?
Ø  “More fiber added”
Ø  This = world of the lie, where reality = perception
REALITY RATHER THAN IMAGE +++++++++++++++++++
Ø  Reality is R business because it comes fr G & will return 2 G & we have task of challenging the lie & we’ll B asked about R performance of that
Ø  Getting behind appearance is difficult
Ø  Have 2 constantly have reality ck on what’s being dished out and on what we’re buying into
Ø  Not being taken in by illusions we know = imp: we don’t want 2B fooled, conned, cheated
Ø  But it’s also XTN’s task 4 we proclaim J 2B the truth
Ø  Taking issue w/ hype & deception = part of R witness to truth
Ø  Making sure we’re not engaged in deceptions = basic of XTN discipleship
CHALLENGING THE IMAGES +++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  Gospel challenges us today at several levels:
Ø  1st level of challenge is world of icons & brands
Ø  Pharisee = Very model of devout follower of Law
Ø  Tax collector = very model of “bad guy”
Ø  In world of stereotypes & images we’re 2 admire 1st & condemn 2nd
Ø  But G acts at level of truth, not of stereotypes & manufactured expectations
Ø  2nd level of challenge is contrast betw extrnl religious practice & desire 2B relationship w/ G
Ø  G doesn’t dwell at level of external & hmn display but in heart & it’s heart that grounds extrnl pract
Ø  3rd = contrast betw self-decption & self-knowledge
Ø  We con selves into believing R own propaganda w/o being aware of R faults & needs
Ø  All in need of greater integrity and of God’s mercy & both addressed in contpltve presnce w/o thinkng
CONCLUSION +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  We’re 2B people of “The Way” & = J is R model we follow
Ø  Today’s it’s clear: takes challenging icons/brands of what’s sold / religious practice not grnded in heart / & enuf silence 2 look @ R self-deceptn & self-knw
