Christmas Eve/Day
St. Mary Magdalene/Our Lady of
Grace
December 25, 2014
BURNING CANDLES +++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
Every
Advent we are challenged to have the same attentiveness of Mary to the flutter
of Christ-life that stirs within her womb
Ø
On
this Xmas Eve/Day may same flutter of XT-life in her, stirs w/i R womb of
complacncy & inaction
Ø
So
often, our world seems starved of stars
Ø
&
we watch or participate in rituals of mourning
Ø
Those
rituals may be for acts of terrorism committed, natural disasters, or the local
tragedies of road deaths or other dark events
Ø
Usually
in these rituals of ours there are candles…
Ø
Pieces
of self-consuming wax & flame that say light has more rt 2 exist in R world
than darkness
Ø
It’s
what we do to awaken deeper connections and longings within us
CANDLES OF THE
ADVENT WREATH ++++++++++++++
Ø
This
was the message, of our advent wreath as we lit one more of its four candles
each week
Ø
&
here we R on Xmas Eve/Morn fully lighted, but these candles, like all ritual
candles, will burn out
WE AS THOSE CANDLES
+++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
It
is up to us, as disciples of the Light of the world, to catch fire from our
personal experience of Christ’s presence…
Ø
And
& bring something of this fire, warmth & light in2 R lives…
Ø
And
especially into the lives of those for whom Christmas may not be a feast of
joy, but…
Ø
A
time of darkness that stirs painful memories of those with whom they can no
longer celebrate because of death, separation, divorce, family quarrels
Ø
Christmas,
for the friendless, the homeless, the abused, may arouse bitter comparisons and
regrets
Ø
The
fire we catch from Christ’s coming to us – our readiness to be consumed like
him in the flame of loving service of our sisters and brothers –
Ø
May
be as simple a gift as a visit, an email, a phone call, an invitation to a
meal, a heartfelt apology for years of not speaking
CONCLUSION ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
It
will mean that, together, we will truly celebrate something of a “Happy Christmas”
