Saturday of the 27th Week in OT
Bon Secours Retreat
October 12, 2019
MARY ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  Let’s put today’s brief Gospel in context
Ø  When the angel Gabriel tells Mary she is to bring God’s Son into the world, Mary quickly responds:
Ø  “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord, may it be done to me according to your word”
Ø  Mary hears the Word of God and follows it
THE WOMAN IN THE GOSPEL +++++++++++++++++++
Ø  Today, a woman, in effect, says to Jesus: “Your mother should be proud to have given birth to such an impressive son”
Ø  And Jesus, in effect, responds: “It is better if your belief in me (1) gives birth to respect for others no matter what, (2) and awakens you to care for the poor, the abused, the oppressed and the depressed”
APPLICATION ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  So Jesus is by no means denying or putting down the greatness and uniqueness of his mother
Ø  Actually, he is calling us to be like his mother
Ø  Mary hears the word of God and follows quickly and fully to it
Ø  And Jesus is saying to this woman that he wants us to do the same — quickly and fully!
Ø  He doesn’t want our following to be simply adoration and awe of him
Ø  Instead, he wants us to balance or complete that adoration and awe with an attitude, mindset and lifestyle that are like his own
CONCLUSION ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  It’s clear that he knows that his mother has done that and now he wants us to do the same
