WRITING THE TRUTH ++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  In our part of the world, in the XTN tradition, we have long history emphasizing the importance of true teaching
Ø  Religious institutions have tried to state exactly what the truth is about God, relations in the Trinity, our relation to G, etc.
Ø  Along with this, of course, has gone the condemnation of those who think differently
DOING THE TRUTH +++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  Other ways of thinking show us how hard it is 2 put divine truth into R human words, R words R always circling around the mysterious truth
Ø  It’s taken centuries for XTNS to begin to embrace the generously tolerant view stated in J’s own words: “Whoever is not against us is for us”
Ø  Given difficulty in expressing G & R relationship to G, it makes more sense not 2 claim too much 4 R formulations
Ø  Others should be appreciated for the good they do to others regardless of whether “they do or do not follow us”
BROADENING THE TRUTH ++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  Gospel is 1 of the roots of an attitude which recognizes G’s action in others is not limited by our definitions of where & how G can work
Ø  XTNS need enuf confidence in Lord to accept fact that G may work thru who believe differently
Ø  Beliefs & formulations are influenced by history, language & are bound to be limited in relevance
CONCLUSION ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø  Jesus’ words ring in our ears: “There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me”
Ø  We need to applaud – as Pope Francis consistently does – the good others do & not expect them 2 mimic R words re divine matters
