JEREMIAH & THE
HUMAN HEART ++++++++++++++++
Ø
“More tortuous than all else is
the human heart, beyond remedy; who can understand it?”
Ø
This
is one of those saying which almost requires us to throw up our hands as we it
Ø
Who
can understand the human heart? How can
I understand my human heart?
Ø
To
get a better grasp on it I checked the NEB translation: “The heart is the most deceitful of all things, desperately sick”
Ø
Then
checked word “tortuous” & found “Marked
by repeated turns or bends; winding, twisting” – now I was getting words to
my own experience!
Ø
There
R times in my life, when I don’t feel this way, but at sometime I am going to
experience my own complicated and shifting heart
PAUL & THE HUMAN
HEART ++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
St.
Paul speaks in Romans of how he – & all of us – at times does what he
doesn’t want 2 do
Ø
Self-knowledge
& experience of living show us how “tortuous,” mysterious & incomprehensible
R R thoughts & desires in/outside the enclosure
OUR HUMAN HEART ++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
Often
know what we should/shouldn’t do, but knowing seems to have no effect
Ø
This
tension involves everything from selecting 2 much cholesterol-filled foods or
sweets to entertaining fantasies or harboring grudges
Ø
We
know what’s bad, yet risk walking into temptation w/ full knowledge
LAZARUS’ BROTHERS +++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
Gospel:
rich man thinks that return of 1 from dead will shake up bros 2 avoid his fate
Ø
Abraham
says, “They’ve Moses & prophets &
:., all necessary knowledge 2 act according 2 G’s will.”
Ø
We
have scriptures, sacraments, & presence & power of Lord active here at
Mass
Ø
Shouldn’t
these help straighten out R own complex hearts?
CONCLUSION ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
Sad
truth we learn fr story of Lazarus is if people can’t act on this knowledge,
they won’t B changed by seeing someone rise from the dead!
