“AS”
Little YET Big +++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
The
parable in today’s Gospel illustrates the meaning of our daily prayer…
Ø
“Forgive us our trespasses as we
forgive those who trespass against us”
Ø
Little
word “as” seems almost negligible, but upon it turns the whole point of the
Gospel
Numbers
in the gospel ++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
Forgiveness
we expect from G requires we demonstrate same 2 all & demonstrate
it indefinitely: 70 x 7 times!
Ø
If
this number stands 4 forgiving w/o limit, other numbers in this story further
underline the point
Ø
E.g.
figure used for official’s debt’s meant to suggest huge sum equivalent to the
national debt or, another commentary suggests, $10 million
Ø
By
contrast, debt of fellow servant 2 official = something like a mere $20
Ø
Obviously,
numbers R included 2 make a point & not 2 record a historical situation
APPLICATION
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
Story
describes G’s forgiveness of us & 2 suggest G forgives on same order as someone
cancelling an incredibly large debt
Ø
Forgiveness
we
are asked to extend in daily life to others is more on lines of
forgetting reimbursement of postage stamp given someone
Ø
We
who’ve been on receiving end of generous forgiveness have daily opportunities 2
deal mercifully w/ those who’ve offended us
CONCLUSION ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
Once
experienced, we must be willing to grant it
Ø
Might
this help us understand why it’s so difficult 4 us 2 grant it?
Ø
“What’s it going 2 take 4 us 2
recognize, experience G’s forgiveness not just in R heads, but in R hearts?”
Ø
We
have the reassurance of (1) SS & (2) experience w/I community
Ø
SLI
then the perfect green house 2 start seedlings of forgiveness before
transferring them 2 outside world
Ø
This
cty then, is a linking of head (understanding) to heart (experience)
