WOMEN & MEN
CONVERTS +++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
Yesterday’s reading from Acts emphasized
Europe’s first women converts to following Jesus
Ø
Today’s passage presents men, Paul and Silas, as
open to the salvation of Christ
Ø
The reading says the men are jailed for driving
out an unclean spirit from a slave girl who told fortunes as a way of making
money for her master
Ø
Like Lydia and the women converts in yesterday’s
reading, the jailor asks, “What must I do
to be saved?”
Ø
Paul’s answer to the unnamed jailer is the same
answer given to Lydia and the women yesterday: “Become a believer in the Lord Jesus”
HOSPITALITY
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
To be saved we too must believe in the Lord
Jesus, but question I’d like to ask today is, “What does it take on our part to bring others to the Lord?”
Ø
For that, Lydia and the jailer have the answer
Ø
Notice that the jailer emulates Lydia in
bringing Paul and Silas home and offering them hospitality
Ø
And it is through hospitality, that the gospel
continues to be preached in Philippi
Ø
Hospitality ranked high in the early Church
HOSPITALITY AND POPE
FRANCIS +++++++++++++++++
Ø
It’s my impression that the power of hospitality
comes across real clearly in Pope Francis
Ø
There’s his moving out of the Apostolic Palace
and into the dormitory of Santa Marta
Ø
His celebrating daily mass in the chapel of Sta
Marta w/ workers & folks staying at the facility
Ø
His open arms to the Orthodox and Muslims
Ø His
genuine respect for & interest in the poor
CONCLUSION +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø Lydia
and the women yesterday, Paul and Silas today, Pope Francis tomorrow – all show
us how hospitality can be the mark of a new Evangelization
Ø
How might we be evaluated as hospitable
individuals whose hospitality brings others to Christ?
