TWO MEANINGS OF 1 WORD +++++++++++++++++++
Ø In gospel, J uses words that have more
than 1 meaning
Ø He does this 2 teach Nicodemus & 2
get him 2 think
Ø 1st Jesus says that “You must be born from above”
Ø The expression Jesus uses here can
mean to be “born again” or to be “born from above”
Ø Nicodemus asks J how someone can be
born again
Ø How is that physically possible?
Ø R translation today says “born from above” becz we now know it’s what
J means by the expression
Ø Nicodemus had to work at understanding
this
Ø & then Js’ 1st expression
gets clearer w/ the 2nd 1
SURRENDER
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø R translation, J says, “The wind blows where it wills...so it is w/
everyone who’s born of the Spirit”
Ø J is using the same word for both “wind” & “Spirit”
Ø What he’s trying to convey to
Nicodemus and what he wants Nicodemus to think about is that we need to
surrender ourselves to God
APPLICATION
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø We need 2 let go of R controls & allow
G 2 take control of us
Ø This is what it means to be “born from above”
Ø & Spirit of Christ who takes
control of us is like the wind – it “Blows
where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, see its effects, but you
do not know where it comes from or where it goes”
Ø In other words, God, Christ, the
Spirit is like the wind
CONCLUSION
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø We cannot control the Spirit
Ø If we R truly “born from above,” then we’ll allow G 2B in control & in a
spiritual sense, we’ll not be in control
Ø We’ll marvel at it’s sound in others’
love and support of us
Ø We’ll see its effects in our own
insights from therapy and prayer
Ø In R reading & listening 2 this
gospel, J is asking us 2 think about same teaching he brings 2 Nicodemus today!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
