ADDITION OF “HIMSELF”
++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
Why do you think Jesus adds the words “in himself” in today’s Gospel?
Ø
It seems like it would have sufficed for him to
say, “For as the Father has life, so he
has given to the Son also to have life” and ended it there?
Ø
Yet, to he adds, “have life in himself”
Ø
It stands to reason that if the Father has life
in himself, the Son must also have life in himself
Ø
Then Jesus must have intended for us to
understand more when he added, “in
himself”
Ø
It’s as if there’s a secret locked up in this
word “himself” so let see if we can
uncover it
PAUL, AN EXAMPLE ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
So why add “in
himself”?
Ø
If we look at the Apostle Paul, we could say that
his encounter with Jesus brought him to life
Ø
From Paul’s conversion, we could truly say dead
people may live again and cross over to new life by believing in Jesus
Ø
Further, when they have passed from death to new
life, the life they have is from Jesus
Ø
Remember, it was Jesus who said, “He who hears my words and believes him who
sent me has life everlasting”
Ø
Therefore, those who believe in Jesus have life,
but note they do not have life “in themselves”
Ø
Nor do they have it in God
Ø
They have it in Jesus Christ
Ø
That’s the key to the mystery: God’s life is in
himself; Jesus’ life is likewise in himself; and all those who have new life,
have it in Jesus
SO WHAT? +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
So in our prayer, in our choices that are
empowered, graced by that prayer, we become one with Jesus
Ø
And in that union we have the very life of the
Son
CONCLUSION
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ø
We are able to understand with a new clarity the
words of St. Paul, “And I live, now not
I, but Christ lives in me”
Ø
In our prayer, in our choices that fact has
become a reality for ourselves as well
